I’m glad I found you. I said this to my wife - without Mirthy, my life would be far less richer than it is now.

Event Description

Hereford was central to the long and violent history of the Welsh Marcher lands, guarding an ancient ford across the River Wye. Walk from the beautiful cathedral, which lies in the city's Saxon heart, across the 15th c. bridge and stroll along the riverbanks. Cross Castle Green, with its monument to Lord Nelson, a Saon monastery and the site of a castle – one of only four in the country before The Conquest. Explore the Norman Market place with its two churches and later timber framed buildings, and see at least one haunted house.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (a recording will be available)
Penny Platts

Meet the Host, Penny

After taking early retirement as a Primary School head teacher, Penny trained as a Tour Guide at Hereford Cathedral and became a Registered Tour Guide for Herefordshire. This has led to an obsession with local history in general, and a particular interest in the parish churches of her home county. She is one of the Churchwardens at her local Parish Church, and is involved in a variety of projects and fundraising there. She and her husband John have travelled widely around the world, putting together several presentations from these visits. They have prepared a total of seventeen talks, which Penny regularly gives to a wide range of local organisations and clubs - on average about eighty talks annually.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy your Mirthy event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Mirthy events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.
