Event Description

After retiring at 60 Pamela went backpacking, firstly to Australia.

She got her dive certificate on the Barrier reef, the Aborigines put on a Corroboree for them, saw Ayres rock change colour at dawn, camped across the Outback.

Pamela hired a camper van with two others and drove the 900 miles from Cairns to Brisbane, on the way rode bare back in the sea, hand fed wallabies on the ferry ramp, fossicked for sapphires and nursed an injured wallaby!

  • Duration: 45 mins

Pamela McLellan

Meet the Host, Pamela

Pamela says she is so lucky, having 5 or 6 lives all rolled into one. In 1960, on leaving the Civil Service, she bought a Hardware shop in Crawley. From this, as a result of a joke and the BBC’s Nationwide programme in 1970, she started a business manufacturing kits for model railways which is still going strong. The next part of her life included backpacking round the world on her own at 60, hang gliding, white water rafting, learning to dive on the Barrier Reef, climbing through a glacier, and walking 17k over Mount Doom from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ film. She then bought a smallholding, with no previous knowledge of farming, and raised cows, sheep, pigs, goats and chickens and sold the produce at Farmers markets and Country shows.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy your Mirthy event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Mirthy events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.
