Event Description

Hadrian's Wall is the greatest structure the Romans built in Britannia and arguably within the Empire itself. Stretching for 73 miles between Bowness-on-Solway and Wallsend, it was far more than just a wall, and contained a whole suite of military defences both along and across it.

Join me on a detective's journey along three sections of this impressive Roman construction to discover the hidden clues in the landscape and reveal the secrets of Hadrian's Wall.

In Part 1 (December 2022), we travelled from Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle, meeting the first African community to be recorded in Britain and uncovering evidence of local Iron Age gods.

In Part 2 (5th January), we will trace the outline of the Roman fort at Stanwix (now hidden under tarmac and buildings), uncover evidence of the military bathhouse associated with this fort, and use modern techniques to reveal what features lie beneath the ground.

In Part 3 (2nd February), we will be journeying further to the east, enjoying our first sight of the impressive vallum at full width, encountering curious carvings in the Wall and understanding the various techniques used by the Romans to build monumental structures.

Meet the Host, Anna Gray

Anna is a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for Cumbria, specialising in personalised tours of Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall and the Lake District.  During 2020, Anna began to offer virtual tours (VTs) as a way for people to enjoy learning without the risk of catching Covid, but now recognises how useful VTs are as a means of sharing information, particularly for those who cannot physically access places.

Anna has a wealth of information on all aspects of Cumbria, with much acquired through her other side-line of producing interpretation material in the form of panels, leaflets and booklets, usually on historic or natural history subjects.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)
