This talk presents both the story of Melanie’s Great Uncle George in a personal account of the war along with the distinctive yet often overlooked story of the Belgians fight for the freedom of their country in the fields of Flanders during the First World War. Melanie illustrates known and less well-known sites in a themed format that provides something for everyone to ensure, as one audience member commented, “the story you told was so much more than mud and trenches”.

Meet The Speaker, Melanie
From being an enjoyable part-time ‘hobby’ the repeat bookings for Melanie Gibson-Barton's talks grew to such an extent that she gave up her 'day job' to become a full-time speaker. Many of her talks have been commissioned by previous audiences for commemorative occasions.
Preparing for the Event
For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).
We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!
