Event Description

This light-hearted, beautifully illustrated and informative talk takes you on a breath-taking journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow on the Waterways of the Tsars, through the grand lakes, rivers, and canals of Russia. Divided into two parts, we follow the Waterways to explore some culture, art and history.

Part 1 - The Treasures of St Petersburg (9th August) explores the Treasures of the Hermitage Museum, with one of the largest and most spectacular art collections in the world, the stunning Peterhof Palace, (the Versailles of the North created by Peter the Great) and the romantic Summer Palace, associated with Catherine the Great. The talk also includes a brief history of St. Petersburg with some unusual stories. Did you know about the Fabergé Elephants?

Part 2 - From Mandrogy to Moscow (16th August) takes us from the River Neva out of St. Petersburg, through Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe, down the Volga river and the Waterways of the Tsars stopping at some of the gems of Russian culture along the way. Finally arriving in Moscow, with the Kremlin and the iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Talk includes a tantalising tour of the fabulous Underground Stations of Moscow amongst other hidden treasures.

*This is a talk exploring the culture, art, geography and history of a fascinating country. We are mindful of the war in Ukraine and the Russian government's current activities. If you would like to donate to support the Ukrainian war effort, click here to donate to the Red Cross donation page.

Rukshana Master

Meet the Host, Rukshana

Rukshana spent her childhood in India, had a thoroughly British education and went on to train as a Fashion Designer in the USA. She married and moved to England in 1970. In the 1990s, she and her husband with their two young sons, decided to buy a little ruin in France to do up as a holiday project. This led to many hilarious adventures, which were the basis for her book ‘As it Happens, A Sparkling Adventure through life on the Bright Side’.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!
