In this event, Abbie speaks to Dr Tricia Cresswell, a retired public health doctor who lives in Northumberland. In 2017, she achieved a distinction in her Creative Writing MA at Newcastle University. After temporarily returning to work in spring 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteering as a vaccinator in 2021, she is now focused on producing work that reflects her concerns about social justice, women’s reproductive rights and the ethical complexities we all face. Creative response to the climate emergency has also taken priority in her writing though, like everything, this has been disrupted by the pandemic.
We will be discussing the Mirthy Book Club's 'Book of the Month', The Midwife.
Set in 1840, the novel begins as a dual narrative: two characters, both living shadowed lives, survive through their work and their commitment to it. One is a well-respected male doctor in London with secrets to hide, the other is a woman in Northumberland who has lost her past but finds her skills as a midwife. The narratives inexorably, but perhaps surprisingly, come together in the final section of the book. This was a time of massive social divide. Marriage was the norm and pregnancy was both a required duty and a source of real fear.
