Event Description

In this event, Abbie speaks to Dr Ian Calvert, lecturer in English Literature and Classics with the University of Bristol and author of Virgil’s English Translators: Civil Wars to Restoration. With a particular interest in English translations of epic poetry, he is also currently working on an edition of Pope's translation of Homer for Oxford University Press.

We will be discussing the March Books of the Month: 'The Silence of the Girls' by Pat Barker and 'A Thousand Ships' by Natalie Haynes, both retellings of the Iliad. We will explore the ways both books use intertextuality to retell Homer's classic, and explore the role of women in this Greek epic of war, power, and romance.

Suitable for anyone who is interested in the classics, ancient history, or enjoys historical fiction generally.

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)

Meet the Host, Abbie & Maria

Maria Parfitt studied Viola under Dr Louise Lansdown at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where she received a Scholarship. Since graduating in 2017 with a BMus(Hons) Maria has established a busy freelance career across the South West and can often be seen performing regularly with orchestras and ensembles including Southern Sinfonia, The Bristol String Quartet, Bristol Insight Ensemble, Terra Coda and many more. Alongside Maria’s playing career, Maria has years of experience in Arts Administration and she currently holds the position as Music Administrator at Redmaids’ High School in Bristol. She also tutors Primary and Secondary Music Tutor at Wolsey Hall Oxford.

Abbie would describe herself as a proud amateur musician! After joining every Bristol ensemble she could in her first year of university, she developed a real passion for chamber music and loves finding fellow musicians at Bristol orchestras who are keen to play chamber music repertoire. As a viola player in her current quartet and at Bristol Met Orchestra, she also loves an excuse to bring the violin back out of its case and onto a stage! She currently works as a Teaching Assistant in schools in Bristol but prior to this job, she worked as Head of Events at Rest Less!

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!
