Event Description

Learn about the history of the Cryptic Crossword, today’s most popular indoor pastime. Discover how a crossword was used to recruit code breakers during World War 2 and how puzzling maintained civilian morale during the Blitz. Learn about crosswords as plot devices in films and fiction. Meet some of the most eminent crossword setters who developed a set of rules to ensure that clues were fair and logical for solvers. From its origins in Roman and medieval word puzzles right up to today’s 3D puzzles, the cryptic crossword has developed into an art form in its own right.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)
Angela Bell

Meet the Host, Angela

Angela has lived in Suffolk since 1986 and is an active member of her local University of the Third Age. For the last two years, she has led a Cryptic Crossword Group for East Suffolk U3A and a second online group for TrustU3A. Both groups have continued to meet virtually when face-to-face contact was not possible.

Angela is a member of a canal boat syndicate and loves exploring the inland waterways of the midlands and north of England with friends aboard the narrowboat ‘Honeystreet’. As well as doing word puzzles she enjoys walking, taking part in pub quizzes, and discovering wildlife.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy your Mirthy event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Mirthy events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.
