I’m glad I found you. I said this to my wife - without Mirthy, my life would be far less richer than it is now.

Event Description

In this talk, Sue Ablett, covers the history of these islands from discovery, through the Conflict of 1982, to life post-conflict. Did you know that Charles Darwin spent longer on the Falklands than he did on Galapagos? The wildlife of the Falklands is incredible, 5 different kinds of penguin, and it is possible to get up really close to them - no long lens cameras needed! In fact, Darwin compared the Falklands to Galapagos because of how close you could get to the wildlife, which showed no fear of man. Although only about two thirds the size of Wales in terms of area, the Falklands vary considerably from one place to another. We stayed in three different places, a chance to experience the varied terrain, chat to the locals, and get a sense of what makes these islands, way down in the Southern Ocean, so very special.

Meet the Host, Sue

Sue Ablett is a great traveller, having visited all continents and loves talking about her trips. Her career included a mix of jobs, from Russian Linguist to Executive Director of a national children’s cancer charity, pulling in a PhD ‘just for fun’ along the way. Now retired she is Chair of Evesham Festival of Words, an avid litter picker, and, despite the advanced years, still a keen distance runner. She also enjoys cycling, dog walking, gardening and splits her life between Leicestershire and Evesham.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!
