Event Description

To celebrate March being 'Women in History' month Claire Cartwright, founder of Friends with Shakespeare, is bringing a series of workshops which will look at three of Shakespeare's staggering female creations. We will look at Cleopatra from Antony and Cleopatra, Katherine from The Taming of the Shrew and Lady Macbeth from Macbeth. Claire will lead a talk introducing the plays as a whole and their contexts and then focus on particular passages in more detail.

Cleopatra - A role to challenge any actor or actress, Cleopatra is one of Shakespeare's (and History's) most beguiling and fascinating characters. Come and interrogate how Shakespeare represents one of history's most controversial women.

Katherine - The shrew. This play has been at the centre of countless heated discussions over the four centuries that it has been around. It remains one of Shakespeare's knottiest and divisive plays and has been performed as a triumphant feminist outcry and a dark look at misogyny and everything in between.

Lady Macbeth - 'behind every powerful man...' and all that! This mystical, magical play has one of the most iconic female figures in Shakespeare's canon at its heart. Come and take a closer look at this complex and provocative force of nature.

Meet the Host, Claire

Claire Cartwright, founder of Friends with Shakespeare, is an actress, writer, producer and tutor. She focused on Shakespeare during her English Literature degree at Edinburgh University and continued this focus while training as an actress at ALRA. Claire has been teaching Shakespeare to both students and adults for over 10 years.
She has played a number of Shakespeare’s leading ladies in London and around the world, including Portia (The Merchant of Venice), Lady Macbeth - twice…best not read too much into that! (Macbeth), Hermione (A Winter’s Tale), Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing) and Peaseblossom … indisputably the leading fairy, if not the leading lady!  (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
