Event Description
Join Amy with some kitchen basics and create something unexpected! This is an experimental workshop where we try things out just to see what will happen! No experience necessary – please join in for the joy of trying a new technique, which you can then continue to explore after the workshop.
During this session we will introduce you to several monoprint printmaking techniques, focussing on drawing into the ink to create texture and form. By the end of the workshop, you should have new skills to continue to explore these options and skills at home, using as many readily available materials in new ways to facilitate learning and creative exploration
Materials you will need:
- An image/ photograph to work from
- Block ink (ideal), but you could try acrylic paint mixed with block medium, or poster paint (this will dry quickly), maybe experiment with oil paint – results will vary.
- Something to use as a printing plate – this could be as simple as a baking tray with grease proof paper Sellotaped to the back, a sheet of silver foil, or you could have a sheet of acrylic/ plexiglass/ perspex, or even those plastic windows you find in biscuit boxes/ chocolates/ toy boxes. All of these will work to varying degrees. I will have a sheet of transparent block, bought from Handprinted. You don’t need to purchase something like this, but I thought it might be useful to see.
- A roller/ brayer or some wide, flat brushes to apply ink to your plate surface.
- Pencils – a variety of hard and soft leads.
- Brushes (to use the ends, as well as the bristles)
- Textured materials to remove/ imprint on the ink: tissue/ cotton buds/ vegetable netting/ old lace/ paper doillies/ hessian or open weave fabrics/ bubblewrap/ thread/ string/ leaves/ fabric to wipe ink from plate etc
- Tub of water (for cleaning brushes, removing ink etc) and veg oil if using oil-based ink.
- Paper to print onto – use whatever you have – printer paper or cartridge paper will be fine
- Newspaper – to protect your workstation but also for use during print process.
- metal or wooden spoon – for printing.

Meet the Host, Amy Hutchings
Amy Hutchings is a printmaker, based in Bristol, specialising in silkscreen and hand print techniques. With a passion for colour and line, her work captures the every day. Amy is also involved in many different community art projects and loves using art to engage with different communities.
Preparing for the Event
For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).
We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

What if I can’t make the event?
If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.
Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?
Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.
How do I watch the live event?
Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.
How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)
Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
