In August 1994, the year of the election of Nelson Mandela as president of the Republic of South Africa, Chris Forse undertook a car journey from Johannesburg through South Africa’s history as that history was being written. Through the battlefields of the Xhosa, Zulu and Boer Wars his journey took him to the township of Soweto and to Cape Town and to Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned. He describes encounters with people, some full of hope and others of despair. He will also describe a second visit in 2001 and the disappointment of not meeting his hero, Nelson Mandela.
